Tips for Shy Couples in 2025: The Ultimate Guide to Natural Photos & Actually Enjoying Your Photoshoot

If standing in front of a camera makes you nervous, you're not alone. As a UK & destination wedding photographer, I specialise in light, airy, & natural images, helping couples feel comfortable by focusing on real interactions rather than stiff poses. This guide is packed with shy couple photoshoot tips & unique posing ideas for couples on their wedding day.

Every couple featured below has one thing in common—they’re ordinary people, not models or photographers, but individuals from all walks of life, living in various locations across the UK, with different professions and personalities. Through collaboration, I’ve helped each of them create a wedding album that truly represents them, blending together elements of romance, fun, and creativity. Before each shoot, I connect with my couples to understand their comfort level, whether they prefer a more guided approach with gentle prompts or a documentary-style experience where I capture moments as they naturally unfold, ensuring their photos feel authentic and effortless.

"Absolutely incredible photographer. Lauren made us both feel so comfortable and relaxed whilst doing the photoshoot and knew exactly how to position us for the most natural look. I will definitely be using her service again for future events"

Why Natural Moments Make the Best Photos

The magic happens in the in-between moments: a shared giggle, a whispered joke, a playful nudge. These are the frames that hold meaning. While some couples worry they’ll look awkward, I use gently guided prompts to create space for genuine connection.

As a documentary-style photographer, I focus on emotion and storytelling. Whether it’s a tender touch or a full-on laugh, natural interactions always trump stiff poses. It’s all about candid wedding photography techniques that feel effortless.

Pre-Shoot Preparation: Setting the Mood

Feeling relaxed before a session makes a huge difference. One of the best things you can do is turn your shoot into part of a day out. A few ideas:

Grab a drink at a cool arcade bar—me and my partner love this before our own shoots. It boosts your mood and sets a fun tone.

Plan a mini date around your session. Whether it’s brunch in the city or a sunset walk, shifting your mindset helps it feel less like a “photoshoot” and more like a shared experience.

This also works wonders for your photos! Nottingham engagement shoot locations like Wollaton Hall, Nottingham Arboretum or the Lace Market area are not just stunning backdrops—they’re great spots to explore.

Movement & Interaction: The Secret to Natural Photos

Worried about what to do with your hands? Don’t be! Movement is key. I’ll encourage walking, spinning, or sharing a quiet moment. Even a little dance or hand squeeze can turn into a perfect shot.

I focus on connection—not perfection. Laugh, lean in, say something silly. The result? Best couple posing techniques and movement-based photography that feel authentic.

  • Nottingham City Centre: Gorgeous cityscapes, old cathedrals, colourful side streets.
  • The Arboretum: A peaceful setting with botanical vibes and golden hour magic.
  • Colwick Country Park: Lakeside romance and dreamy woodland backdrops.
  • Newstead Abbey: Historic architecture, rose gardens and elegance.
  • Sherwood Pines: For couples who love the forest and that escape-to-nature vibe.

Each of these offers variety, atmosphere and lighting that complements my bright and airy style.

''It's been 1 week since our wedding, and we received a few preview photos the following day. Wow! Lauren, I absolutely can't wait to see what else you have produced for us. We still can't stop looking at the previews.

Thank you for being part of our day. We couldn't have imagined having anyone else to photograph our intimate wedding. You understood what we envisaged and wanted, and from the photos we've seen, you've produced far better than we imagined.

Thank you for making me feel so relaxed and comfortable with myself. I really hate having my photo taken, but with you, I was absolutely fine. In fact, I think I really enjoyed it, and our little hour on our own having photos taken by you was probably one of my favourite parts of the day.

Thanks again, and we'll definitely be booking in for a family photo session! ''

''Lauren was amazing start to finish when being the photographer at our wedding. She helped the day run smoothly so essentially acted like our wedding coordinator as well as a photographer! Lauren did not blink twice about storm Darragh that paid us a visit for our wedding day. She was able to take outside couples portraits so quickly but we still feel like we got lots of pictures! We were unable to have our confetti pictures outside so Lauren coordinated with the venue for us to have the confetti throw inside and we are so glad she did as they are some of our favourite photos!

The turn around for the pictures was so quick and she even was able to do some extra editing on the pictures to make sure we were completely happy with them. Our friends and family have already had some of the pictures printed and we cannot wait to have some up in our house, the only difficult thing will be narrowing down which ones!

We would defo recommend Lauren, she blended in like one of our guests and was also our biggest cheerleader! Thanks so much Lauren!!''

''The best wedding photographer you could ever hope for. From the day we booked Lauren to the wedding day Lauren was fantastic. Lauren was professional but also warming and welcoming, making myself and my wife relaxed from day one.

On the wedding day myself and my wife were extremely nervous about being photographed but Lauren put us at rest immediately. Lauren has captured out day in the most magical way and the photographs are better than we could have ever imagined. If you are thinking of booking Lauren all I can say is DO IT. You will not regret the decision to have this talented photographer capturing your special moments.''
