How to Look Natural in Family Photos Without Feeling Awkward or Stressed
“Look natural!”, the most dreaded fraise a parent can hear for their family shoot, and it will obviously make you feel anything less but natural, right? The good news is, looking relaxed and at ease in your family portraits doesn’t have to be stressful and is actually pretty simple.
As a Nottingham-based photographer, I’ve worked with many families, helping them feel comfortable and enjoy the process. Here are some of my top tips to ensure your family photo session is fun, natural, and full of genuine smiles!
1. Let Go of Expectations
One of the biggest things that can cause tension during family photos is the pressure to have everything "perfect." The truth is, the perfect family portrait might look different from what you imagined—and that’s completely okay! Letting go of expectations and simply enjoying the moment will help you relax. Remember, this is about creating memories, not ticking off a checklist.
2. Why So Serious?
Have fun with it! I always encourage families to play, laugh, and just be themselves. Your family photo session should feel like a fun event to look forward to, not something to stress about. Sometimes, the best shots come when you let go and just enjoy the moment. Whether it’s a little tickling or a goofy smile, those moments make for natural and beautiful photos.
3. Focus on You, Not the Kids
I know it’s tempting to make sure everyone looks perfect, especially the kids, but trust me—you don’t need to worry about getting everything just right. The best photos happen when you focus on looking your best and let me do the rest. It’s all about capturing the love and connection between you, so don’t stress about adjusting collars or fixing hair in the middle of a shot. The focus is on emotion, not perfection. / bring your kids favourite toys so its more for them to focus on and even you to have fun and live in the moment with them - wether thats a ball, bicycle or jenga (not kidding - kids are never too focused on me once those blocks come out.)
4. Keep It Moving
One of my favourite tips for capturing authentic family portraits is to keep moving between shots. Believe it or not, even the pros don’t stay perfectly still! Movement brings energy and creates those real, candid moments that show the natural connection between family members. So don’t worry about staying perfectly posed; a little movement can work wonders!
5. Remember to Breathe / it wont last
I know, this one sounds obvious—but it’s so easy to forget. Taking a deep breath helps calm your nerves, slow your heart rate, and let go of any tension in your body. Relax your shoulders and just enjoy the experience. I’ll be snapping away, capturing moments from every angle, so don’t stress if every single shot doesn’t feel like a "perfect" one. We’ve got plenty of photos to choose from to find the one that truly captures the essence of your family.

Kind Words from Florence & Thomas: A Wollaton Hall Wedding to Remember
Lauren accommodated all of our requests for our special day, we purchased a package with her for 2x photographers (1x for the Bride and 1x for the Groom) so we were reassured everything would be captured on our day. Lauren put us at ease from the beginning and did her best to accept and facilitate every request we made for photos and the end results are BEAUTIFUL.
We had our Engagement shoot also with her and it was a great way to break the ice and get used to having professional shots taken of us. Lauren worked very hard to make our wedding memories and photos perfect and we received nothing less than perfection in her photos. The exposure, the lighting, the moments, the poses, EVERYTHING was spot on and we couldn't have asked for a better photographer to capture our day. We will be forever grateful for her work and she has been professional throughout, keeping us always in the loop and even surprised us with a mini-preview of shots from the wedding merely days after it happened! Thank you so very much Lauren, your work has been amazing and we can never thank you enough for everything!
